This fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor provides a low-mass, electromagnetic-immune solution for detecting icing in planetary atmospheres. The sensor works by monitoring the temperature fluctuations triggered by the phase transition of supercooled water droplets on its surface. Its rapid response time and resistance to harsh radiation environments make it a highly effective candidate for atmospheric composition monitoring during planetary exploration.
